Kattenstoet: 9 Times the Fun

The Festival of Cats

Kattenstoet (festival of cats) is a parade held in Ypres, Belgium that has been held on the second sunday of May since 1955. Also known as the throwing of cats, the festival pays tribute to tradition once practiced in the area during the early 1800s . It is thought that it began as a way to ward off witches and other evil from the town. Don't worry though pet lovers. There is no cat tossing at the Kattenstoet festival. At least not real ones. Instead stuffed cat toys are tossed to children that attend the parade.
